The Call Of The Wild

I woke up early the other morning to the sound of several coyotes yipping and howling not too far from the house. Judging by the sound they couldn’t have been much further than 200 yards into the forest. I love hearing that sound – kind of a wild sound, the call of the wild if you will.  It reminds me that I live on the edge of wild country.

Once I was more awake and realized what I was hearing, I did a quick mental check: yes, the chicken pen is locked up, the electric fence was on, chickens were locked securely in their coop, everything was cool.

You don’t have to own chickens though, to still be aware and on guard for coyotes.

It’s mid-April, and coyote pup-rearing is in season. For coyotes that means more hours spent hunting and more aggressive hunting at that.

So, don’t wait until you hear the coyotes before taking action. Because often they are in your neighborhood hunting quietly and you may not even know it. Your trash, your pet’s food – and yes, even your pets, are all on the menu for a coyote.

So be assertive and take steps now to make your yard and home coyote proof.
